Open Letter Project

Dear Trump Administration,

I am writing you this letter as a concerned citizen of the United States.  I understand that you all have your beliefs and views on certain topics, but I would like to try and change your minds about one very important topic, climate change.  We live in a beautiful world but are slowly killing it.  I want our planet to be safe for our children's children and onward.  I know the idea that we are killing our planet may seem surreal and scary, but at some point you need to realize if we continue to do what we are doing, our planet will die and us along with it.

The proof of global warming is astounding and very real. Carbon dioxide, especially from cars, is one of the worst toxins we are distributing into our atmosphere.  Our atmosphere is made up of many different elements, carbon dioxide being one them.  Each element must be balanced in order for the atmosphere to continue working as our barricade from the hot sun.  Because we have admitted so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the carbon dioxide levels are rising more than they ever have in the last 400,000 years.  If we reach a certain level of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, we will have no protection from our sun and essentially our planet will burn. These statistics and facts are not just made up by random people. Organizations like NASA, The National Science Foundation and National Geographic have scientific evidence to back up this information. According to an article written by NASA, “Humans have increased atmospheric CO2 concentration by more than a third since the Industrial Revolution began. This is the most important long-lived "forcing" of climate change.”  Our decaying atmosphere is already taking effect on our planet. Our global temperature is rising, oceans are warming, ice sheets are shrinking, glaciers are retreating, snow cover is decreasing, sea levels are rising and extreme weather events are happening.  This is occurring because of what WE are doing.  These are not naturally occurring events that we should ignore.

I know many of you may say that it’s still cold in many places of the world, especially during winter so how can there be global warming? Well, a local cold day or series of cold days has nothing to do with the long term course of the increasing global temperature. There are excuses after excuses for you to fight back with, some relevant and some irrelevant. But I don’t want to sit here and argue with the facts that are sitting in front of both of us.  I want us to come together and make a change. I want to save our plant and all the wonderful people that live on it. Please try to see another point of view so we can start changing the world today before it’s to late.

                                                    Sincerely, A hopeful citizen
